C4D Solo Button

I end up working on a ton of projects each year and the majority of these involve Cinema 4D in some manner or another.  As the complexity of a scene grows and deadlines approach, it can become all the more difficult to work inside of “heavy” scenes and it’s incredibly frustrating to watch the viewport grind to a halt.  While we believe in creating extremely clean files, broken down into multiple layers and groups, it is not all that efficient to always turn them on/off and then have to double check layer states at render time.  A while back we stumbled upon the free Magic Solo script by Nitroman and this has quickly become an important part of our workflow in C4D and a script that is used daily.  The release of R16 saw this functionality added into the core program, but for those of you working in earlier versions, I consider this a must have in the toolkit.

When working with a heavy scene, or even if you just want to isolate one object quickly and work on it, simply select that object(s) in the object manager and then hit the “Magic Solo” button.  After a second or so, you are left with only the objects you have selected and are able to edit and animate as necessary without the remaining geometry bogging down the viewport.  When completed, just click the “Magic Solo” button again and the rest of your scene reappears.  The only noticeable pitfall is that the script solos not only the geometry but also the associated materials which is not always the desired result.  We have found out that applying all scene materials to a single null then selecting both the null and the objects allows all materials to remain usable while still speeding up the viewport.
